A big part of my creative process is listening to a bunch of music and then staging things to it in my head. If you also do this I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, and if you don't, I guess just imagine it like you're devising a music video and the what the song does is dictating what happens next. This isn't necessarily how every story element comes to be, but it's sometimes how I determine the atmosphere, emotions, movement qualities, and pacing of certain scenes, and also what has inspired some of the comic's events. I thought it might be fun to include a list of the songs that have shaped the comic, and to which scenes they correspond.

If you'd like to listen to everything in a playlist, you can find it here!

Song Scene
Map of the Problematique - Muse opening and Abner's Travels from chapter one to the end of chapter four
The Sound of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel Cyril driving/incarcerated
Citizen Erased - Muse Mindfuck the First
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel the eponymous scene
Garbage Truck - Beck Milo's debut
Teeth - Lady Gaga
(I know, I know, I'm sorry)
the marching scene obviously
(Kesi does not want your money or your sex)
Sail To The Moon - Radiohead Abner's little death
Hell Bent - Kenna Abner's brain problems
Winter Song - Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson Christmas
Resistance - Muse Tristan's debut (starting from about 4:16)

I also have theme songs for most of the characters, because what fun is it otherwise?

Song Character
Doomsday Serenade - Jill Tracy Narissa
It's worth noting that this song was not only the inspiration for the comic's title, but I honestly think Narissa sounds like Jill Tracy.
Intermission - Scissor Sisters The Carriers
Banned from the Roxy - Crass Cyril
Mad World - Gary Jules Abner
Still Alive - Lisa Miskovsky Poe
Gravity - Vienna Teng Poebner
Liquefy - The Servant pre-separation Poebner
Scott Pilgrim - Plumtree Sam
I Miss You - Blink-182 Abner and Dave (bros4lyfe)
Eternal - Evanescence Dr. Blackwell
